Driving around the area this evening to check if the winter tires I installed earlier are all good and fine, I stopped at a non-signaled train crossing to check for trains, and once I started moving, the car stalled on the train tracks. FFFFFUUUUU.
Photo from December 2013, there's no snow yet.
from an earlier test with my scantool, one of four O2 sensors is flatlined, which I'm assuming is what is making the car run crappy at idle, and sometimes even makes it stall as a result.
Given that this is an auto with push-to-start, I couldn't start without being in park. So I quickly put it in park, hoped a train wasn't coming while the engine was cranking up, and huzzah! I was off, and floored it outta there, the engine bellowing at full throttle was a sound to be reckoned with.

Wow. That sucks knobs. Is the moral of the story to avoid train tracks from here on out?

Pro Tip: Most systems allow for you to attempt a start in neutral as well. Does this not do that, or have you tried?

Actually, more like "Don't rely on an 8 year-old BMW with idling issues."

haven't tried that, at least in this case, the adrenaline rush instinctively put it in park.

It'd be useful to know if you have the car die while still rolling, definitely. If it's mostly an idle thing, less critical, but you never know.

But why?!

Because race car.

Should be able to start with it in neutral. That way you don't have to stop if you aren't already

The car stopped by the time I realized it died, as it was a slight incline.

I'm guessing that this kind of level crossing is still legal in America?? Why?

if you had a manual , there would be no problem

Technically, Canada. This crossing is in the outskirts of town.

hence why I don't want to own an automatic.

Because. Upgrading all our crossings would cost a LOT.
Here is our program to upgrade our level crossings.
